Hi Mathieu, it looks like the audio for 2g and 3g are fairly similar but I've yet to find the exact magic that makes the audio output work. I've just started working on a simpler test program that should help sort it out. Just need to find the time to hack on it. THe firewire kernel panic is a known problem. Just don't boot linux with it plugged in ;) Its still low on my priority list but if this Audio stuff starts working soon then maybe I'll get a chance to look at it. cheers, bern. Great job with the how to :) I was wondering how to use the cvs to update the source and your guide was an asset. After doing a quick run through of what you tried, I found a few problems involving missing steps (I will add these in) and seemingly unnecessary steps (I have never needed to convert the kernel to a raw binary image) and most importantly, typos :O Unfortunately, when I booted the ipod into linux (after unzipping the file in the hfs partition) I received these errors: mount_devfs_fs():unable to mount devfs, err:-2 ... which in turn gave me the error about not being able to open a console, and finally, a panic. Any suggestions? Thanks Jeff N. |

Hi, I really want to try linux for iPod. I have 3G ipod (10gb without docking station, touch sensitive buttons). First I would like to ask what will happen if I will delete everything by accident (firmware all files, etc). Will I be able to restore it with iPod Updater app? Second question is about OS X. I want to install linux to ipod using OS X. Is there manual or something like that for OS X? What is ipod /dev/xxx represenation for ipod hard disk? I couldn't find it. Third question is will i be able to easily connect OS X and my linux ipod and transfer files between them? As I understand it is possible to create tools for iPod with Linux, isn't it? Thank you very much! Aidas |

It seems the HFS+ based root filesystem is not as easy as it would seem. The problem is with the /dev filesystem, so a simple work-around is to use the "devfs" filesystem. To enable devfs in your kernel; File Systems -> [*] /dev file system support [*] Automatic mount at boot Or by editing the .config CONFIG_DEVFS_FS=y CONFIG_DEVFS_MOUNT=y The rest of the root filesystem should work as-is and devfs should allow the device files to work correctly. If someone gives this a try I'd love to see a short HOWTO :) Thanks to Daniel Hazelbaker for the devfs tip. cheers, bern. |

hi, at kernel startup i have the following error: Warning: unable to open an initial console The root partition is well mounted (since i have VFS: Mounted root (hfplus filesystem) readonly.) and the init process is running etc/inittab. But apparently it never runs the etc/rc scripts (or i can't see any results because it should prints "Welcome to ipod linux" and i don't see it). Is it due to the console problem? how can i fix it? thanks, jc. |

Sorry, I should have read your email better! You can use this version, but you need to use UMSDOS to "convert" it to a normal unix looking filesystem. Fortunately I done this already and you can download it from the following URL: <http://ipodlinux.sf.net/ipod_fs_030323.tgz> You need to extract this one as root because it creates device files. cheers, bern. I've had a brief look at the firmware for the mini and I'd guess that the hardware differences are about similar as those from 2g to 3g. E.g. it will take some hacking to get things going. There are two big hurdles though, firstly they have changed the boot loader and from first impressions it looks as though there is some special header required on the OS image. The second problem is that the bootloader and diagnostic images appear to be encoded somehow. As you say being able to run as a host makes things a bit more interesting... ok, thanks. I'll try this way. I agree with you that my kernel problem are very strange :). I going to=20= recompile from scratch and see if i get the same problem and i'll keep=20= you informed. Well, I've got several ohter questions: -once i installed the kernel on my ipod what must i put on the root=20 partition -i don't really understand the last part of the howto "building a=20 uClinux system for the ipod" called "user tools". What is it? thanks, jc. Le 11 mars 04, =E0 10:04, Bernard Leach a =E9crit : > > In order to see a HFS+ partition you need HFS+ filesystem support and=20= > Mac > partition support.
