There is a gzipped tarfile on the ipodlinux site (not in the downloads area) that may be easier to deal with; <http://ipodlinux.sf.net/ipod_fs_030323.tgz> Then for the other binaries; <http://ipodlinux.sf.net/download/beta/mp3example> <http://ipodlinux.sf.net/download/beta/podzilla> If you still have trouble with these let us know what you have tried and how it fails and we should be able to sort it out. cheers, bern. Hi, I am having a lot of trouble fixing up the root filesystem that is available on sourceforge. I have a G3 10 GB ipod w/ firewire and usb. Could someone please send over a root filesystem with a mp3 player and/or podzilla all compiled and ready to be ran. -Thanks :Air conditioners are a lot like computers. Hi guys, I just spent the evening building the latest cvs versions and installing them on my ipod (2.4.24-uc0 + ipod_fs_030323 / new modules). I'm pleased to say it worked out pretty well (i.e., I didn't delete my 24Gigs of mp3s in the process and I'm still smiling). Great work lads! Good to see this project coming together! Not all is working though - I get 'no such device' errors when the rc script reaches ifconfig. I guess I'll be debugging without telnet for the first while... (Didn't I see a very recent email from Bernard that the G3 issues had been fixed?) Audio: I fired up 'mp3example', and it seemed to play the song quite happily - but I didn't hear anything. No error messages, and the process ended neatly after the song was over. Am I missing some instructions on how to change the volume? FS: I tried 'mount -t vfat /dev/hda2 /iPod' (after having created the mountpoint) - but failed. Have I got the wrong device name? Any assistance would be welcome here, as I can't wait to actively start contributing to the project. Jonathan Ross. P.S.: I tried podzilla, which works as intended - good work gentlemen! The only thing that worries me is the news about Apple's patent... |

The stock beta kernel only supports the root partition as number 3. Redo the partitioning document, except this time reconfigure your linux partition to be sda3 and it should work fine. Don't even try using UMSDOS... it becomes a headache as if you are using the 2.6 kernel you will have to boot back into a 2.4 series kernel to install stuff. Moreover, its very slow on the ipod, where a directory of 30 files takes almost 20 seconds to list out. I got the kernel to successfully boot, however, it only boots into a BASH shell, I am guessing this is because there are no apps to boot, but how do I install apps? Does someone have an "rc" directory or the filesystem all together that they could gzip and send me? I can't seem to troubleshoot the one available on the sourceforge area...thanks! |

I installed linux on my ipod, and after several unsuccesful boots, I decided to ask the pros :) When I boot, the kernel panics, not because of the lack of user tools, but it can't boot the root filesystem. I mounted /dev/sda2 , went to the mount point (/mnt/ipod) and unzipped "ipod_fs_030323.zip" when I do, it creates directory "linux", so i unmount it, reboot, and get the same message again: "VFS: Cannot open root device "hda3" or 0 3:03 Please append a correct "root=" boot option kernel panic: VFS: Unable to mount root fs on 3:03" My partions are the same as the howto partioning document says: -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Disk /dev/sda: 10.0 GB, 10000005120 bytes 255 heads, 63 sectors/track, 1215 cylinders Units = cylinders of 16065 * 512 = 8225280 bytes Device Boot Start End Blocks Id System /dev/sda1 * 1 1 8001 0 Empty /dev/sda2 * 6 1215 9719325 b W95 FAT32 /dev/sda4 2 5 32130 83 Linux Partition table entries are not in disk order -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Also I am not sure as to how to mount the iPod as UMSDOS, I am running Fedora Core 1.90 on a 2.6 kernel...any help? -Thanks |

I looked through the Documentations and the Forums and I cannot seem to find how to install user tools (i.e. ipp package, SoX, etc.) onto the iPod...any tutorials? Any help would be appreciated, my guess would be to gunzip/untar/install it in the / filesystem... -thanks |

I've just updated to -rc2 to move the SCSI support to a module (its only required by the sbp2 driver so the main kernel is a bit smaller). <http://ipodlinux.sourceforge.net/2.4.24-ipod-0.4-rc2.tar.gz> The user binaries (shell, busybox, modprobe etc) can all be found in the userfs on sourceforge. Or the .tgz at <http://ipodlinux.sourceforge.net/ipod_fs_030323.tgz> cheers, bern. First off, I would like to say excellent work to all the developers involved in this amazing project. However, I have thought of something that has not been addressed very much (maybe a few entries on the forums, sorry, am sorta new here) What I am thinking of is power management. For a Linux operating system to be of any use on an iPod, it must be kept in mind that the battery capacity is extremely limited, and it would only last 20-30 minutes if not plugged in becuase the HD is always spinning. The Apple firmware keeps the HD spinning for maybe a minute every hour while playing music, lowering the power consumption a lot. Perhaps it is possible to load the operating system on a ramdisk, and mount/unmount the hard disk only when necessary? Are there any plans to include such a feature in the future? Thanks in advance, and sorry for interrupting if this is something that already has been addressed. |

It's firewire mostly works for me, but still has bugs (2.4 was much worse for me, others said it was stable, too). > And is it true that there is no audio when running linux on the 3g iPod? There is an ogg player in the user tools release on sourceforge. Its not real time though. Probably it could do with some better buffer management but it also maxes out the CPU. I'd like to see the OGG support improve but given my entire music colleciton is mp3 is not the highest priority for me. WMA huh... I haven't looked into WMA much but there seems to be a decoder for V1/V2 but not for the latest version of the codec (on x86 they seem to just use the windows .dll, that aint going anywhere on the iPod). The other likely problem is that it uses floating point and so will be useless on the iPod. cheers, bern. Oh okay, cool, i might check it out and see if i can hack it to buffer the next few songs to memory as well. It is the IPP (intel performance thingy) based program. Its been patched to buffer the entire mp3 to memory and seems to play quite well. What mp3 playing software were you talking about Bern? Is it real time? From the browser it can display jpeg or text files. We play to add simple mp3 playing support to this shortly. In the mean time a beta is available from [1]. Just copy this to the sbin directory on your ipod and modify the /etc/rc to include /sbin/podzilla as the last command. There is also a fairly good mp3 player. Because its not integrated into podzilla you have to run it from the command line (via telnet) or put it in the /etc/rc file. You can download it at [2]. I have also just added the MacOS version of the bootloader. Its available from the project filles section [3]. cheers, bern. Forwarding to the ML) Sorry for the noise from a non-developer, but what is currently possible (without hacking, but with enough effort) to do with this release? In other words if I install the root fs, loader & kernel, is there a music player + ui that can be used? -- William |

A new version of the ipod bootloader has been added to the sourceforge download area. This fixes an endian problem seen on big-endian machines (e.g. Macs). As soon as I can access the sf compile farm I will build a MacOS binary and add it to the releases. cheers, bern. |

Hi all, I have prepared a beta binary release of the 2.4.24 kernel. This kernel can be installed on either a win32 or mac iPod. This kernel will use devfs and expects /dev/sda3 to be root (*). It has support for 1g, 2g and 3g. Firewire support is build as a module (to avoid the booting panic) so a modprobe is required to load the module (modprobe tsb43aa82). To install, extract the files from the archive, use the bootloader patching tool and linux.bin as the kernel, then copy the modules (the lib directory) to the iPod root filesystem. The download is located here; <http://ipodlinux.sourceforge.net/2.4.24-ipod-0.4-rc1.tar.gz> * for windows users this means repartitioning your iPod! UMSDOS has gone from 2.6 and I don't plan to support it for 2.4.24 (at least the binary release). The repartitioning howto says to create a new partition '4' but create a new partition '3' and everything is all good. cheers, bern. |

The MacOSX toolchain has been added to the downloads from ipodlinux. Thanks to Jean-Charles for helping me with that! <http://sourceforge.net/project/showfiles.php?group_id=73079> |
