I really like this setup! Very well done. I want io to be my Linux environment, but I also need to have Windoze for some of the apps I use. I already have Win10 installed on my machine. I have had a dual boot setup in the past with Fedora and Kubuntu. Will the io installer let me do that?

Hmm. I'm completely ignorant regarding this sort of thing. I don't have a solid state drive, so does that mean I probably do have MSDOS partitioning? My computer(Lenovo y50-70) came with Windows 10 pre-installed.

And if it is inded the case that I'm using MSDOS partitioning, can io coexist with it? Sorry for such lame questions, but I REALLY want to use your setup -- I think it is fantastic. It's exactly what I always imagined an ideal linux desktop shell should be.

Well it should just install fine on your computer.
Make a backup of your windows partition before beginning.
GParted is installed on io GNU/Linux too, you can find it in the Applications menu: System > Config
in GParted: umount /dev/sda2 resize /dev/sda2 in the free space, create an extented partition inside the extented partition: create an ext4 partition (30G) create a swap partition (4G if you have a RAM of 4G)
* create an ext4 partition (using the available free space, this will be your /home partition)
Optionaly reboot, or launch the Installer (Applications menu: System > io Live) and use the advanced mode to be able to manualy select the partitions for / and /home.
Let me know how it's going. :)

Hi Manu! Sorry I took so long to respond -- I got really busy on a project.
So... I followed your instructions(thank you very much!), and everything went well. IO Live runs great from my usb drive, and when I installed to disk, everything went smoothly. The problem that I'm having now is that when IO boots from the hard drive, it freezes. The three small orange squares appear, and turn white then back to orange again in sequence from left to right, then the screen turns black, and there is an underscore character in the upper-left corner of the screen. It hangs at that point. So I booted into recovery mode, and ran: journalctl -xb, as suggested, and wrote it to a file that I've attached. The computer I'm using is a first generation Lenovo Y-50-70 with an Nvidia GeForce GTX860M graphics card. Any idea what might be going on?
No problem, I'm quite busy this week-end too, I'll have a look if I can today.
If you have time... maybe try to reinstall (make a copy of the installer's log when the installer finish before rebooting.. it's located in /var/log/live), maybe something has gone wrong during the install process... hope we can solve this quickly.
Best regards.
Manu

I installed the previous release of IO and it and works just fine. I take it from the release number that it is pretty much the same minus one kernel update? Is that right? Anyway, definitely no urgency with respect to the problem I was having -- I'm VERY happy with the release I have installed now.
Thanks a lot,
Matt

Anyway, I'm very happy too :) Greetingz

Yeah, I installed 2016.03. Works great! Whatever the problem I'm having with the latest release is, it must be something really minor. It ALMOST gets there...
Yes, I would love to test your next release! By the way, I am a veteran visual effects artist, and I am in the process of forming a small company to do subcontracting work for larger studios. I intend to use IO as the default desktop environment for us artists. Perhaps we could strike some sort of 'official' maintenece contract? I had always intended to put together a desktop myself that would be our default, but you beat me to it;)

I'm an artist too and well I can not offer a maintenance contract in the way, I'm not h24 standing behind my computer... but, of course, we have to talk more in details.
Best regards :)

What kind of work do you? I do FX animation mostly for silly high budget films, but some commercials as well. I used to use Maya a lot, but now mostly Houdini. Anyway, here's that output:
Oh, one other question I have -- and this one definitely falls under basic E functionality, but I couldn't find an easy answer... I like to be able to move a window with the mouse without affecting it's stacking order. For example, I often like to have Houdini open with the help browser over the Houdini workspace, so I can have a documentation page open in front of the scene view while I do stuff in the node editor. I'm used to being able to do that because I'm a dinosaur, and the deafult window manager settings in 4Dwm, the window manager for Irix that ran on Silicon Graphics worksations let you do that. I've been able to get FVWM to behave this way, and Kwin, but I don't see an obvious way to do it using E. Am I making any sense?
Sorry to bring this up in this forum area -- I'll start using new threads in the appropriate areas from now on.
Thanks a bunch,
Matt

Well I've no "official" job, I use to develop IO and it takes me a lot of time, in the otherwise i'm Dj and since 2011: Dj+Vj (mixes and real-time visual Fxs... done with lebiniou a great Vj software developped by my friend Oliv3 :), Here you can check my artist work ;)
Regarding your graphical setup, I'm not really sure to understand, the lspci indicates that you have Intel based graphics but you're talking about an Nvidia, am I missing something? an Nvidia card should be using the compatible driver when booting IO live (you can check by opening the nvidia-settings program.
Regarding E functionality, check making a right click on a window border (or [Alt]+right click when the mouse is over a window)... there are a lot of possibilities there. ;)

I think I might have a clue as to why my machine freezes when I try to install the current release. I ran nvidia-xconfig, which, of course writes a new xorg.conf file to /etc/X11. When I rebooted after that, it froze in the same way as it did when I tried to install the current distro. So I logged in in non-ui mode, removed that file, and it worked again. I don't know ANYTHING about configuring X for Nvidia. As you know, when I ran:
I know this damn computer has a GeForce 8600M in it -- it works ok with windows, I just can't seem to get it configured for Linux. If I run lspci -v without the grep, one of the lines is:

Subsystem: Lenovo GM107M [GeForce GTX 860M]

If you want to check if you Nvidia is correctly configured and up:

If it does not show an error message, it's ok.

Yep we're using Sid.. in the io live/install, normally there's all to get your nvidia working, it's just that when starting the live, the way I try to detect a combo intel/nvidia is not working with your setup, but manually we can fix this.
Can you prepare an usb drive with io and a partition for persistence? instructions here
When your done, it could be great to meet us on IRC in the next days, so we could make some tests... it would be very useful for me to fix the problem. Is it ok for you?

Thanks for your interest.
At the moment the installer does not support GPT/UEFI setups, if you have MSDOS partition table it should not be a problem.

Open GParted program and post here a screenshot of your computer's disk partitions, it will be more easy for me to help you. :)
Hi Manu,
I didn't have a network cable, and I couldn't get wifi to work with gparted, so I just took a picure with my camera.
Thanks,

Hi Matt,
Well the xorg.conf is a bit outdated, check in the /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d folder, is there a file called zz-live-config_xserver-xorg.conf there?
