I was having the same problem. In a mode of trying anything,
I ran a "disk cleanup" (click on "my computer", then
properties, then "disk cleanup"). It took a while but after
it was completed, I went back to surfing on the web and have
not gotten a single "404 error". I was even getting these
on sourceforge, also on google.com/mail, everywhere. May
be just circumstantial but can't hurt for you to give it a try.
If this works, I suspect this means getting this error a
lot means that privoxy doesn't like resources being limited
somewhere. Just a thought. Good luck.

I too had this problem on OS X 10.4, a 'repair permissions' worked as well.

I don't really think resources are the problem; perhaps it
has to do with the TOR circuits. Almost always a
/etc/init.d/tor restart
gets me going again

Hi, same here :/
is there an Option to make privoxy wait longer if it has to
wait for Tor?
Or an option to enable dns-caching, so i only have to wait 1
time?

Try a newer Tor version. If it doesn't help, apply:

This is having a problem with the amount of time it takes to
reach or gather data from the site. Try clearing all your
cache and cookies and doing a disk cleanup.

Please try Privoxy 3.0.5 beta.
It has some improvements in that area.
