Category: configuration Group: 3.0.17 Status: Pending Priority: 5 Private: No Submitted By: Duc (duceduc) Assigned to: Fabian Keil (fabiankeil) Summary: privoxy 3.0.17 not starting on boot Initial Comment: I have upgraded to 3.0.17 on a ubuntu 11.4 server. The upgrade seems to be working fine with the exception of privoxy not starting on boot. I can manually start it with command line, however. I noticed in my rc2.d folder, the privoxy file is not present. I assume that is how privoxy is to be started on boot? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Comment By: Andrew J. Caines (cainesaj) Date: 2011-10-25 14:58 Message: Since the version of privoxy in the Ubuntu repo is still at 3.0.16, a simple option to run 3.0.17 is to: o install the packaged version, o copy the supplied /etc/init.d/privoxy o remove the package o install 3.0.17 from source o restore and modify /etc/init.d/privoxy to start your installed privoxy (a trvial change to DAEMON=) o run "update-rc.d privoxy" After that, privoxy 3.0.17 should start properly on boot and work correctly with service(8). Note that I've done this once and some time ago, so caveat sysadmin. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Comment By: Fabian Keil (fabiankeil) Date: 2011-10-25 12:51 Message: There's a known issue with newer GNU libc versions that can result in Privoxy not being able to bind to the listening address if the network isn't completely configured yet. The 20 seconds delay might be sufficient to work around it. For details see: https://sourceforge.net/tracker/?func=detail&atid=111118&aid=3349356&group_id=11118 ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Comment By: Duc (duceduc) Date: 2011-10-25 08:15 Message: After fiddling with it some more, privoxy is starting on it's on during boot. I am not sure which did it. Multiple uninstall/reinstalling of privoxy or adding this line in my /etc/rc.local '/bin/sleep 20 && /etc/init.d/privoxy start' Correction on my server version. It is a Ubuntu server (10.4). ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Comment By: Duc (duceduc) Date: 2011-10-24 07:54 Message: Additional info. I have skimmed through the 3.0.17 manual. 5.2 states that privoxy will use a script to start at boot and uses the main config file located in /etc/privoxy/. The default installation location is now located in /use/local/etc/privoxy. http://www.privoxy.org/user-manual/startup.html I'm not sure if this means anything in my case. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Comment By: Duc (duceduc) Date: 2011-10-23 10:26 Message: I have all debug enable, but log's not showing any errors. The install is acting weird. I can manually turn on privoxy with the /etc/init.d; however, when I reboot machine, the service doesn't start automatically and I cannot manually start it either. It says privoxy.pid doesn't exist. Reinstalling doesn't help either. It still the same after a reboot. Is this caused by setting a 'user' during install? I followed the install doc. It asked to created a privoxy user and group and install it with this cmd: make -s install user=privoxy group=privoxy ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Comment By: Fabian Keil (fabiankeil) Date: 2011-10-23 08:21 Message: So does using the script work? If you enable logging, do you get any failure messages from booting? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Comment By: Duc (duceduc) Date: 2011-10-23 07:20 Message: Yes, the file is in /etc/init.d/privoxy. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Comment By: Fabian Keil (fabiankeil) Date: 2011-10-23 06:49 Message: I would expect the start script to be /etc/init.d/privoxy but it might as well be somewhere else. Try searching /etc for file named or containing the word "privoxy". ---------------------------------------------------------------------- You can respond by visiting: https://sourceforge.net/tracker/?func=detail&atid=211118&aid=3427457&group_id=11118 |
