I've used the IJB proxy for 3-4 years now & am delighted to discover Privoxy. The problem described here does *not* occur with IJB. Config particulars: -- Windows 2000/SP2 build 2195, Xeon 450mhz, 512mb RAM, Netscape 4.8 (NS), Privoxy 3.0.0 (P). -- No mods to P's default. or standard.action files. -- Config.txt takes most defaults with two exceptions: ** Buffer-limit=8192. Increased from 4096 hoping the problem had something to do with P being unable to process the entire page. ** Listen-address 127.0.0.1:8000. Port set to 8000 to facilitate switching back & forth to IJB while implementing/testing P. Problem *does* occur with port set to 8118. -- Only active (+) P filters are banners-by-size, banners-by-link, fast-redirects & nimda. All others disabled while debugging this problem. -- User.action contains minimal entries for the NYT, all for graphics.nytimes.com domains that display ad graphics. -- NYT requires registration & cookies to read articles. I'm registered & the cookies are present in NS' cookie.txt file. User.actions set to accept other NYT cookies (-crunch-incoming-cookies, -crunch-outgoing-cookies & -session-cookies-only). -- The following entries appear in a -block section of my user.action file. See log entries below) to understand why these are coded. They are to no avail. ** .nytimes.com/auth/ ** .nytimes.com/reuters/technology/tech-tech-microsoft-security.html Problem description: -- After loading main page, clicking any link to read a story results in what is best described as a loop: **Modem connection icon flashes steadily to indicate constant data flow ** P's system tray icon animates (spins) continuously ** NS' status line flickers with the message "Connect Host: www.nytimes.com. Waiting for reply ...." ** The page never loads. -- From reading the log, it appears the NYT uses redirects to fetch & display other pages. -- The log contains a variety of entries depending on the debug options set. (Duh!) Several different combinations have been used while trying to resolve this issue. At present, 1, 2, 128, 4096 & 8192 are enabled. -- Here are the log entries for what seems to be one attempt to get the requested page. The number on the left is the parenthetical msg number preceding each msg. 01076) Connect: OK 01076) Connect: accept connection ... 00856) Redirect: checking path for redirects: /reuters/technology/tech-tech-microsoft-security.html 00856) Request: www.nytimes.com/reuters/technology/tech-tech-microsoft-security.html 00856) Connect: to www.nytimes.com 00856) Connect: OK 01076) Connect: OK 01076) Connect: accept connection ... 00856) Redirect: checking path for redirects: /auth/login?URI=http://www.nytimes.com/reuters/technology/tech-tech-microsoft-security.html 00856) Redirect: redirecting to: http://www.nytimes.com/reuters/technology/tech-tech-microsoft-security.html 00856) Request: www.nytimes.com/auth/login?URI=http://www.nytimes.com/reuters/technology/tech-tech-microsoft-securi ty.html crunch! -- The problem *does* occur with IE 6.1/SP1. -- Other relatively sophisticated sites, including other major newpapers such as the LA Times, The Chicago Tribune & the New York Post work correctly. User.action entries for these sites are used to block the ad graphics not handled by P. Your assistance will be appreciated. Happy to set action & debug options as instructed. Many thanx, Dilly dil...@di... ---------------------------------------------------------------------- >Comment By: King Dilly Double Moon Pie (tdilly) Date: 2002-10-30 04:07 Message: Logged In: YES user_id=638065 Thanx for the speedy reply. Yes, I had fast-redirects on, but I experienced the problem before resetting it. I spent quite a bit of time reading the doc, changing debug options to get more info, etc. The bit about redirection sometimes causing problems & the recco to set fast-redirects on is what prompted me to do it. Nonetheless, I disabled my user.action file, went back to the site & can read any article I choose. I reenabled the file, turned off fast-redirects (-fast-redirects) & can still access the other links on the site. Go figure. (Is it just me or do errors & strange behaviors just seem to disappear after a while when using Privoxy?) Thanx again & keep up the good work. You guys're doing a great service & we're grateful. I loved the IJB & I'm thrilled with Privoxy's power & flexibility! Don't. This site has had problems with this setting in the past, and in fact there is a rule for it in default.action. If its on, please try it with it off. I just clicked through 5 or 6 articles from the main page, and read from nytimes fairly regulary with no problems (and no ads :). washingtonpost also, fyi. If this doesn't work, can you revert to all stock configs, just as a test? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Comment By: King Dilly Double Moon Pie (tdilly) Date: 2002-10-30 00:14 Message: Logged In: YES user_id=638065 Forgot two items: -- I use ZoneAlarm 3.1.395, but disabling it has no effect. -- IJB & Privoxy are *not* concurrently.
