Hey :)

I 2 problems with privoxy ..

The first is when ever i run privoxy, I get an error
that another privoxy is running on PORT 8118 or another
program is running in PORT 8118. This problem showed up
the second time i used the program. Strangely, TOR
works even though Privoxy is not working.

The second problem is that when ever i use privoxy or
TOR i can freely use it for an hour or so then my
internet connection bails on me. Nothing works at all,
not internet explorer, not anything...! I try to close
all my connections and reconnect but the same happens.
When i reconnect, I get an error message that the
network cant find my IP address..! Only when i restart
my computer the connection returns and I can freely use
the software until the connection disappears and i have
to restart again... P.S. this doesn't happen if Privoxy
or TOR is working!!

Can you please help me... ?

Thanxs a lot :)

If you started privoxy twice without restarting,
probably the first process is still running.
Did you check which process is listening on 8118?

What do you mean by "tor works"? Does it only start,
or can you use it for surfing the web? Tor and privoxy
are independent and don't care if the other one is running,
but tor alone can't be used with IE directly.

If you can use IE with tor, it means privoxy (or a similar
    proxy) is running as well.

Your second problem doesn't seem to be caused by tor
or privoxy, but without more information about your
setup and what "everything" means, it's hard to tell.

    Hey thanxs fabiankeil for replying..

First of all, how do i know which application is listening
    on 8118?

And by "tor works" i mean i can surf the web with it.. Plus,
i have to use both in order to surf the web..

And by "everything" i mean the internet connection is lost..
I get no IP address from the network..! I can't surf the
internet because a connection isn't detected and the proxy
server (that the network uses) doesn't respond..

    I don't know the windows equivalent of sockstat -4 -l -p 8118,
but you should be able to use netstat -a to see if 8118 is
in use, and the Task Manager should show you if privoxy is
    already running.

I don't see how your problem with the Internet connection
could be privoxy or tor related, sounds more like a DHCP
    problem.

    hey,

It turns out that privoxy is listening on port 8118..
Apparently privoxy auto starts everytime i start windows.. :)
    Now thats fixed..

    About the second problem, I didn't instal DHCP .. :s Do i
have to instal it? Could you explain some more about that ?

    Thanxs :)

If you need DHCP or not depends on your network setup,
as you wrote you didn't get an IP address I assumed
    you already use DHCP.

However DHCP has nothing to do with privoxy or
tor and I'd suggest you try a web search or
    get a decent TCP/IP book.

I've been getting the same "fatal error" problem the last
several days, here is the quote from the message box:

    Privoxy Error

    X Jun 01 14:33:03 Privoxy(02412) Fatal error: can't bind to
127.0.0.1:8118: There may be another Privoxy or some other
proxy running on port 8118 then it says OK

I've tried uninstalling and reinstalling the privoxy
package. No help! I get the message every time the machine
starts up. Apparently privoxy is not running after I check
    the OK box.
I did not change Firefox or anything else just before the
    problem began several days ago.
I do not have the problem described above where the internet
connection drops out requiring a machine restart.
