Thank you. It appears that the /var/ld/ld.config file did not exist, and the LD_LIBRARY_PATH variable was not being set, so it could not find a bunch of gnome/Xpm etc libraries. Try a failsafe session and start icewm from the xterm. It will tell you what's wrong (hopefully).
