Desktop icons?

Hi,

I'm a relative newbie, so please be gentle ...  ;)

I am very interested in using IceWM for our LTS (Linux Terminal Services)
networks, but would really like to be able to have icons on the 'desktop'
for the (very NON technical) users to access their programs and files (home
directory, shared directory).

I know I can have these on the 'taskbar', but if there is any way to get
icons on the desktop, I'd like to do so.

I believe this is gonna require a 'file manager', but I'm still having
trouble getting my head around the diffeent layers of 'desktop', 'window
manager' and 'file manager'.
