Max, sorry to be slow responding to your very helpful suggestions. 

When I do xprop on the Firefox window I get:

  WM_CLASS(STRING) - "Gecko", "Mozilla-bin"

Will this start Firefox? On the drive I'm currently using, I have both
Mozilla and Firefox, and Mozilla comes up. On the target drive I'm
trying to set up, there's only Firefox, so maybe it will work.
