Both SET CTLCHAR OFF and SET CTLCHAR ESCAPE yield
Error 0001: Invalid operand
although the code that uses them seems to work.

Also, the msgs appear twice on the screen, but only only once in the
trace

    rc4: set ctlchar off works, set ctlchar escape gives this message "Error 0001: Invalid operand: ESCAPE"

    Error is correct. Syntax is SET CTLCHAR char ESCAPE. You are missing the 'char', like %

    SET CTLCHAR % ESCAPE is accepted now with 3.3RC4 and also with 3.3RC2.
