Patrick, I do know on the odd occasions I have had art inside tags, it usually takes an "update from file" for the art to properly appear, giving the impression that gtkpod doesn't read the tag for art by default on startup. There may be a preference for this but I never looked it up or played any further as it tends to be easier (only from my perspective) to stick a jpg inside the mp3's album directory instead. Not sure if this helps you much further.
