As I understand, simply cloning to github shouldn't be a problem. I wonder if there is a way to also bring along the open issues (or at least those determined to still be relevant. I'm happy to help instigate the change, but I certainly am not capable of becoming a core developer. In the very short run, however, I'd love to see a fix for compiling with -fno-common (now the gcc-10 default.) I've tried, and the fix eludes me, but I'm certainly not a great C programmer. A note to the Gentoo bug says Debian and Fedora still support gtkpod, but their fix for this is just to force -fcommon. It's certainly a reasonable work-around, but I still don't think a real fix should be very difficult. > > My username on sourceforge is jonasio, my username on GitHub and > GitLab > is jonaski. > > Let me know what you think. > > Jonas Kvinge > https://github.com/jonaski > > On 04.07.2020 09:57, Paul Richardson wrote: > > Hi, > > > > The original leader on the project was a German, Jorg Schuler. Hi, I still use libgpod with Strawberry Music Player, which is a fork of Clementine. https://github.com/strawberrymusicplayer/strawberry I got 2 working iPod Classics that work with the library. I think one is a 5th gen and one is a 6th gen. The 6th gen is almost unused as I found I could not use RockBox on it at the time, so I mostly used the 5th gen to be able to play FLAC. I'm willing to help keeping the library and gtkpod alive. It would be a shame if the library and gtkpod was dropped from distros. Firstly we should fix the webpages. http://www.gtkpod.org/libgpod/ is up but has a lot of broken links, I think it has been like that for years. I'm willing to do it we someone could can get the contact details of the owner. I suggest moving the git repositories to GitHub which has a larger community, it would be easier to get contributions that way. I can help with the transition. I can also help making sure it still compiles and works so it doesn't get dropped, occasionally making a bug fix release. My username on sourceforge is jonasio, my username on GitHub and GitLab is jonaski. Let me know what you think. I occasionally use it like you, with an old iPod nano and a shuffle that I have lying around. I have more music on my Android phone than on the 16gb nano. The last time I compiled it was 6 years ago or so when I updated my Linux box to 64-bit. -Joe Jack via Gtkpod-devel wrote on 07/04/2020 12:43 PM: > Thanks for that. Thanks for that. I'm curious if there is anyone out there still actively using gtkpod. I only fire it up rarely for an ancient iPod Shuffle, and it's more nostalgia then real use - for which my android phone is more than sufficient. I suppose it's effectively abandonware at this point. Hi, The original leader on the project was a German, Jorg Schuler. Given the whois info shows .de name servers I think he is still probably the owner. I took over gtkpod for a while and updated the UI but haven't used it let alone compiled it in years. My iPod is long since dead - I've moved on. Realistically, iPods/iPhones moved on too. We spent a couple of years playing cat n mouse with Apple. In the end, they just locked out access to the iPhone/iPod db so only iPods up to the Classic (roughly) worked with libgpod and gtkpod. This hastened gtkpod's decline in interest. If you or anyonelse wishes to take over then happy to help with any transition. However, can't do much about the domain. It looks like it was renewed in May, so it's not abandoned. If someone doesn't fix the database error, it seem likely that Gentoo will drop the package. I've been unsuccessfully trying to get it to compile with gcc-10, which is another issue that will affect an increasing number of distros. Jack |

http://www.gtkpod.org gives Database error A database query syntax error has occurred. This may indicate a bug in the software. The last attempted database query was: (SQL query hidden) from within function "Job::pop". MySQL returned error "1146: Table 'DB21816.gp_job' doesn't exist (80.81.241.56)". If that's an IP address, I wonder if this is because the site's IP address changed "recently" Separately, https://www.gtkpod.org returns only an empty page (content is "<br><br><br><H1><center></center></H1>") so I don't know if that's a configuration issue or simply a lack of certificate. Paul, Thanks for the response. That's sort of what I expected. I also used gtkpod more heavily some years ago, but was recently trying to recompile everything on my PC with gcc-10. Hopefully someone who still uses it regularly will step up. As the program still works, even this issue won't be critical for quite a while, depending on which Distro someone uses. Hey Jack I moved on from maintaining gtkpod a few years ago now. After replacing my ipod (died) with an android phone, I had no device to test on & no cause to use gtkpod. If anyone still wants to keep it alive, they are welcome. (If anyone knows a way to reply to a message from the archives, or have mailman resend me a copy, please let me know. Not replying directly, since I also just subscribed.) I don't know of any way to make gtkpod use python3, but it's easy enough to tell it not to use python at all, thus removing the dependency on python2.7. I use Gentoo, so for me, it's just setting a USE flag, but I believe the parameter to ./configure is just "--without-python. It still runs that way, but I can't test much since I don't currently have a suitable device to test with, so I really have no idea if this reduces functionality in any important way. More important for me, is that gtkpod fails the final linking with gcc-10. This is apparently a known issue due to the default change from fcommon to fno-common. Given the lack of activity, I have to wonder whether to consider gtkpod totally dead, or is it still alive, albeit in near suspended animation? Jack |

Hi I'm trying to copy album art to the iPod, but it's not working, although itdb_track_set_thumbnails returns success. So either my iPod is not supporting it, or I'm doing something wrong. It creates the track here: https://github.com/jonaski/strawberry/blob/master/src/device/gpoddevice.cpp#L153 The functions calls itdb_track_new. The it adds the album art here: https://github.com/jonaski/strawberry/blob/master/src/device/gpoddevice.cpp#L167 Then it copies the track to the iPod using itdb_cp_track_to_ipod here: https://github.com/jonaski/strawberry/blob/master/src/device/gpoddevice.cpp#L180 I use an iPod Video 60GB 5th gen, model MA147FB I also got an iPod 80GB 6th gen, model MB029 - This one is problematic to mount on Linux, if I get it to mount at all I get "Couldn't find an iPod database on". Is it supported at all? Jonas |

Hi, I have an ipod nano ( 2nd gen / A426 / software version 1.1.3 ) and latest debian unstable. ipod songs load fine. However there are issues when I add songs to an already existing playlist in the ipod. Example. 1. Consider playlist "p1" with 1 track "t1". The track list in "p1" is now: t1 2. Connect ipod to rhythmbox, and add a track ( say "t2" in ipod to the "p1" in ipod ( via, Add to playlist ). 3. Now uplug and view the playlist in iPod. The track list in "p1" is now: t1 t1 t2 4. Repeat steps 2 and 3 with another track say "t3". The track list in "p1" is now: t1 t1 t1 t2 t2 t3 But, rhythmbox displays no duplicate entries. It displays only t1, t2, t3 in "p1" Refer attachment for details. I have osx Lion & El capitan. I can test any suggested fixes / requests. The bug is a bit cool, since if you rate a track in "p1", all those with the same name in "p1", get the same rating :) -- thanks, vrishab |

Hello, I recently upgrade to Debian stretch and was unable to get ipod playing working using either gtkpod or rhythmbox. Rhythmbox would show the device but not any content and gtkpod would not even see the device. I then upgraded gfvs to 1.27.90 (from 1.26.2) and could see the device in gtkpod but it crashes on entrance and rhythmbox crashes as soon as I click on my iphone device. The backtrace for both ends in libgpod. Here is the last part of the backtrace from gtkpod: #0 0x00007ffff5db71bd in g_type_check_value_holds () from /usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/libgobject-2.0.so.0 #1 0x00007ffff5059ba5 in ?? Hi, So I'm writing an app in c# for Windows and as I understand to use libgpod I would need a mount point. However on Windows there is no mount point of iDevices. How can I connect to the iDevice with libgpod (and how can I select from multiple connected devices, if it's possible)? Do I need to use libimobiledevice (I couldn't really find a function for mounting media of device, or to get mount point) or mount it somehow? Thanks for help. geiszla |
