You need gtkpod 0.99.8 and libgpod 0.4.0. Artwork is read from either the APIC ID3 tag or from a file in the same directory as the music file. You need to set the correct iPod model in the "Edit iPod Properties" right mouse-button dialog(*). You need to enable Coverart in the preferences dialog ("Track Info" pane), which is the default. You can also add coverart via the 'Edit Track Details' dialog. gtkpod does not modify your music file, i.e. does not save the album art in your music files.
