Gdk is part of gtk+, the toolkit on top of which Gnome (and Unity for that matter) is built. As such, you should be mindful of the fact that upgrading it can have profound effects on the rest of your system... There appears to be various PPAs that provide this version for natty (see http://www.ubuntuupdates.org/packages/show/298565), but as always with packages not directly controlled by Canonical, don't expect the level of quality control you find in the main Ubuntu repositories. The alternative is to go all the way to 11.10 now that you've come that far. However, note that Gnome2 is not included in 11.10 any longer, so you'll have to either get used to Unity (which I honestly don't find that bad... much improved between 11.04 and 11.10 in any case), or to Gnome3. Ubuntu is an OK distro, that makes your life very easy if you stick to what's in the official repositories. Once you start wanting more recent versions of individual packages though, it tends to get trickier to use than simpler, less user-friendly distros (think Arch).
