It's "worse". Apparently, the values in the dialog are ignored.

See screenshot. It scanned color (and legal) despite being set to black/white (and letter).

However, if I change the values in the dialog, they do update and I can scan b/w letter size after that.

Restarting the app resets the options. In other words, once you get things set up, restarting the app resets to some other defaults and your settings are forgotten.

Thanks for the report. You are using 2.1.0, which is nearly a year old - presumably the version that ships with Bionic.

Please try v2.5.0 from the PPA. Particulary in v2.4.0, I made significant changes to the way scan profiles are handled.

Please switch to the libimage-sane-perl frontend in Edit/Preferences. The scanadf is only still there for historical reasons and occasionally for debugging purposes.

  Thanks! I upgraded recently and I'm /still/ finding apps that need
  attention in one way or another. Really getting old typing 'sudo apt

  When starting for the first time, after scanning for devices, the Mode and
  Geometry tabs are blank.
  
  Closing the Scan Document dialog and reopening it "fixes" the problem.
