I think this is a flaw. ImageMagick is a nice thing, don't get me wrong, but it's also 2GByte of storage, which is a lot on a laptop.
If gri shipped with .png files instead of .ps files for the documentation, the package would be smaller. The questions are:
1) would this compromise the quality of the postscript version of the manual
2) can texinfo even HANDLE png files??
Why not simply include both .ps and .png in the tar file? e.g. run 'make png' as part of 'make source' .
