Hello,
I use Mac with English as defulte language. ( No chinese instaled on my computer )
But when I downlaod Gretl for mac, the interface is in Chinese
How can I change it to english?
Thanks
[Gretl team note Nov 2019: The cause is still unclear, but the workaround is to set gretl's language manually: Second menu (from the left), first entry, then first subitem; gives dialog window. See Allin's post in the thread below for details.]
Please take a look at the attached file.
This is a known but a little mysterious bug on Mac. Quoting Allin from the mailing list: "[sometimes] on Mac: gretl starts up in an apparently arbitrary language. You might be able to help us debug this. Could you open a Mac terminal window and type
echo $LANG
(followed by Enter), and let us know what the response is. For example, here on Linux I see:
robroy:~$ echo $LANG
en_US.UTF-8
"
So if you (or any other Mac users affected by this) could do this it would be helpful.
I'm editing the bug title to make it clearer.
thanks for the report
Sven
Thank your guys for the effort
I don't really remember how I solved it! soo sooorry I would live to help since its open source ..
I tried the code you wrote above the the resultes was:
en_US.UTF-8
I remmerb I searched online and found a code and once I wrote it on terminal Gretll worlks fine in Enlgish
btw I don't speak chinese but recently I downloaded Chinese lang package for my mac but it's not default lang ..
So it could be that gretl picked random lanauge because i have 3 languages on my mac including Chinese and English
Thnx
If I understand correctly, Abas's problem is gone, but the underlying cause is still unclear.
So I'm leaving this open to attract further input from other Mac users who may be affected. Again I'm repeating how users may help:
"Could you open a Mac terminal window and type
echo $LANG
(followed by Enter), and let us know what the response is."
Thanks,
sven
Ah, it turns out my diagnostic suggestion was not very helpful. I've recently had two classes of students (n =~ 60) install gretl. Among the Mac-using majority I saw 3 cases of an unexpected language appearing, but "echo $LANG" in Terminal gave "en_US.UTF-8". However, all 3 students had previously installed software that was in the language that gretl auto-selected. So it seems $LANG, as known to Terminal, is not decisive, and gretl is being affected by some other setting. What gretl actually consults on startup is the C-library function setlocale(). I haven't got to the bottom of this issue yet, but I'll try to figure out a better diagnostic.
Do you remember what MacOS version they were using, or what kind of software they had installed?
Sorry, I didn't get to that level of detail; I'll try to do so when the opportunity next arises. But I think the students were using "recent" MacOS and in some cases it was probably language-learning software they had installed.

So the diagnostic would be: The user should look in ther region &
language settings (or whatever it's called exactly) and see which
language (locale) is on the top of the list.

There hasn't been any more feedback from Mac users. Is this still an issue?
Hi, i have just downloaded gretl for mac and am having this problem except the language is in hwat seems to be russian. i have tried changing it to english but it remains in russian. this is the Max OSX quartz version
You need to restart gretl after selecting "English" as the language (note, not "Automatic", since your Mac is telling gretl that it wants Russian, or whatever the language is). The selection can be made under the second menu from the left at the top of the main gretl window: take the first item, then the first item under its sub-menu. to see something like the window in the attachment. Open the menu where it says "Russian" and scroll up to select English. Then click "OK", exit gretl and restart.

Actually, still an issue, if folks are still tracking. Mine installed with Greek as the language.
Some possibly useful input came from the reporter of https://sourceforge.net/p/gretl/feature-requests/124/: Apparently he had a Mac account linked to a phone (iPhone I guess), and that account had been set to the language which then mysteriously appeared on the main computer. Would be interesting to know if something like that could be the case for other affected users.
It's been a while and nobody complained about it anymore. I'm tempted to close the ticket. Maybe it was even an Apple bug which was solved on their side? (See the previous information from Sep 2020.)
Or did people hear about it recently through other channels?
Hi everybody,
I have uploaded gretl on my mac and I had it appear in Greek. Thank you for your guidance through to change back to English.
Funny, Greek seems to be a "preferred" unwanted language to appear, for unknown reasons. Anyway, the recipe for changing gretl's language (to English or whatever) is given in the Nov. 2019 addendum to this bug's original description, in square brackets.
Apart from that, thanks for the report that this is still a problem. Could you tell us what your MacOS version number is? And whether you're using a Mac account which is somehow also linked to an iPhone? Because there is this suspicion that that could be related to the underlying cause.
I am on MAC 11.6 version. It is linked with my phone and computer so maybe related? Anyway, working fine now
OK, roughly 1.5 years after the latest activity here, it's time to ask again if this problem is still affecting people? Please make yourselves heard if this is the case! Thanks for any feedback.
And one more year. I really think it's time to close this.
I agree.
OK, closing this. As always, if there's evidence that it's still a problem, it can be re-opened.
