      I get

      checking for X... no
checking for XOpenDisplay in -lX11... no
      checking X11/XKBlib.h usability... no
      checking X11/XKBlib.h presence... no
      checking for X11/XKBlib.h... no
configure: error: cannot find X11 development files

I have the directory /usr/X11R6 but no XKlib.h or anything like that.  What should I do?

Never mind my question.  Here's how I solved all of my problems, which appear to have been your problems and then some more.  I use Fedora, so you may have to modify these instructions for your distro.  I searched for xorg-x11-devel on rpmfind.net, and installed the appropriate version (try the most recent, and pay attention to the architecture and Fedora version info). Ta-da!
