Category: gtkam Group: None Status: Open Resolution: None Priority: 5 Submitted By: towsonu2003 (towsonu2003) Assigned to: Nobody/Anonymous (nobody) Summary: more documentation on unplugging camera Initial Comment: it would be very nice to have documentation on how to unplug the camera after using gtkam (and, of course, not unplugging it while transferring pictures). filesystems needs to be unmounted in linux. from documentation, it is not clear whether you need to unmount your camera before unplugging it. it is also unclear how to unmount it, if you need to. reasearching, I found this: http://www.linuxworld.com.au/index.php/id;298681864;fp;2;fpid;37 where it says: "When you're done using gPhoto, remember to turn your camera off before disconnecting it from your computer." So do we need to turn it off before unplugging? Whether we need to turn it off (or unmount it somehow (have no idea how), documentation (at least the man page) needs to show that to the end user. Thanks. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- >Comment By: towsonu2003 (towsonu2003) Date: 2005-12-29 02:22 Message: Logged In: YES user_id=1411889 Uhm, yes -> even that would be enough "Do not be afraid to unplug the camera now." ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Comment By: Marcus Meissner (marcusmeissner) Date: 2005-12-28 11:34 Message: Logged In: YES user_id=48092 When using gphoto ... well, you can just disconnect the camera after use. I guess the documentation needs to suggest: "Do not be afraid to unplug the camera now." ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Comment By: towsonu2003 (towsonu2003) Date: 2005-12-24 03:01 Message: Logged In: YES user_id=1411889 The camera I am using (Canon Powershot G6, which caused me to look at this issue) is not seen as a storage device. But gtkam can transfer images from it though. Above article says that you have to power off the camera before uplugging when you are done. It does not mention filesystems (therefor my confusion, and the lack of documentation in gtkam). My point is: gtkam documentation is fine when it comes to initiating communication, but lacks advisories on what to do after you are done with the camera. Such as: -unmount it if it is mounted as a filesystem -turn it off before disconnecting if it is not recognized as a filesystem. -if you do not do one of these, you may loose you data on your camera. Lack of documentation is confusing as well. The link above says "power off before unplugging"; you are saying "you don't need to do anything, just unplug it" (if I understand correctly); and the documentation does not address this at all. thanks for the reply and fixing the category (to feature request). ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Comment By: Hubert Figuiere (hfiguiere) Date: 2005-12-24 02:46 Message: Logged In: YES user_id=27487 I just read the article. I don't see your point. If the camera is a USB storage camera, then yes, you should be unmounting it. But it is because of the way filesystem works in Linux. As for camera you use with gtkam, there is nothing special to do... ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Comment By: Hubert Figuiere (hfiguiere) Date: 2005-12-24 02:23 Message: Logged In: YES user_id=27487 feature request ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Comment By: towsonu2003 (towsonu2003) Date: 2005-12-23 21:20 Message: Logged In: YES user_id=1411889 sorry - meant to post as feature request... ---------------------------------------------------------------------- You can respond by visiting: https://sourceforge.net/tracker/?func=detail&atid=358874&aid=1389150&group_id=8874 |
