Then indeed it's a misnomer.  Which leaves two ways to proceed:

*) keep the name, but change the implementation so it actually does
cause PS Level 1.0 output to be generated.

*) find a new name. 'ai' might just be right.

I don't think so.  But then, I've never used Illustrator, so I wouldn't be
the right person to ask.  Maybe a user poll is in order.
