Indeed.  I have no idea either.
So now I installed an rpm for Polish(ed) Linux which I find to be in general
highly compatible with Mandrake
	automake-1.8.3-1.noarch.rpm

WIth this in place the ./prepare; ./configure sequence completes
successfully, although there are some strange warning along the way.
I could try to find an even newer one, but so long as it works....
