gnuplot library dependancies

How can we get gnuplot to look for it's libraries in a place other than the 
default?  We have libpng.a(png.o) in /usr/local/lib and libpng.a(libpng.so.2) 
in /opt/freeware/lib.  We tried the with-png=/opt/freeware/lib thing. No luck.  
There doesn't seem to be a command line option.  Do we have to change the 
Makefile?
