I find it questionable to automatically append ads to the messages of
users who did not ask to be sponsored and who may rightfully oppose to
the use of their own messages as an advertising vector.

Did you consider moving the mailing lists to an ad-free hosting service
such as Savannah?  Would it seem feasible?
