echo "set terminal png;plot '/tmp/t'"|gnuplot -mono
does not make a mono png. Oh, it is an x option... OK, at least make
an error message.

Indeed, on the "png (NEW)" info page, we find no simple way to make
mono png's.  We will have to use a post processor like ImageMagick.

You ought to put cross references in the Label, Title, etc. Info
pages, to "Key", as I searched for hours before finally figuring out
how to turn the filename off in the output.
