I assume you were saying they shouldn't be public, rather than that
they should ..?

I guess the lists were configured in the days before spam was so bad, and
no-one ever changed them. It is mildly useful for people to be able
to find out the exact address they are subscribed as, but that's
not a strong argument.

OTOH I pretty much accept that my email address is going to get into
various lists no matter what I do, so I have to have a decent
anti-spam mechanism. So I don't care who gets hold of my address.

[ then again, this is "only" my work email address. I am less open
 with my personal one !
