In some contexts I think it's fine to have the gnuplot spec and the 
data in separate files, but in other contexts it's preferable to 
have them integrated (in case the data get deleted, moved or 
inadvertently modified).

For me, yes, the ability to define a reusable data block before 
the "plot" lines would be a nice enhancement.
