[Gnuplot-info] Question about clustered histograms

Plotters,

The plotting is just not working, though I think I'm following the example code in the manual (page 51).

Here's the script:

set terminal png 
set output 'histograms.png'
set style fill solid 1.00 border lt -1
set style data histograms
set style histogram clustered gap 2
set xtics border rotate by -45
plot for [COL=2:3] 'tmp_data_file' using COL:xticlabels(1)

And my data looks like this:

e-02	2	4
e-03	11	33
e-04	33	2

The clusters of bars and X labels are made correctly but lines like:

'tmp_data_file' using COL:xticlabels(1)

are inserted at the top of the image, where the keys should be.

If I use "[COL=2:3:2]" instead then only a single bar is created, rather than a cluster of 2 bars.

What am I doing incorrectly?

these are the keys.

to switch them off, use 'unset key' or an empty 'title'
option in the 'plot' command.

if you use only one column for the histogram, then there
is nothing to cluster.

maybe it would be better not to use the 'for' loop, instead
you could use:

plot 'tmp_data_file' using 2:xticlabels(1) title 'dataset 1', \
'' using 3 title 'dataset 2'

Right. Tried a number of variations of "for", none of them worked. Now I'm using the "using 2:xtic(1) title col …" syntax, similar to what you suggested, and it works fine.
