[Gnuplot-info] smooth frequency & table

I re-post here a question I asked in

The smooth frequency directive is very useful to generate histogram of
statistical data. Sometimes it is desirable (for instance to deal with the
file of reduced size) to save these statistics as figures in a file; this
can be done using the set table option.

Even if you try this on a very simple file, such as

2
you get a strange output

################
#Curve 0 of 1, 3 points
#x y type
 1  1  i
 2  2  i
 2  1  u
################

notice that there is an extra line, as if there was something undefined.

This weird behaviour does not occur for the simple dataset

If you suspect a bug that it is general useful to report:
1. What version of Gnuplot you are using (try:gnuplot --version)
   rationale: your problem may be fixed in a later version

2. write a small gnuplot script that shows the suspect behaver
   rationale: the problem may be a parameter that you have set/not set.

carminat i tested what you said with 4.4.3
the script is used was:

plot "-" u 1:(1) smooth frequency
1
2
2
e

when i do this i get a straight line from 1,1 to 2,2.

the extra line with undefined data is only a problem
when using the 'table' output for further processing,
e.g. plotting.
but since it is marked as undefined and it is at the
end of a data set, you may omit it.
in gnuplot you may do this by using the ternary operator:

plot 'tablefilename' using (stringcolumn(3) eq "i"?$1:0/0):2
