[Gnuplot-info] time format for axes under Mac gnuplot

I've built gnuplot for my Mac (via Fink) but I'm having trouble working out what's wrong with the below (highlighted) so all help appreciated.

gnuplot> show format

	tic format is:
	  x-axis: "%y"
	  y-axis: "% g"
	  x2-axis: "% g"
	  y2-axis: "% g"
	  z-axis: "% g"
	  cb-axis: "% g"

gnuplot> set format x "%D"                  
gnuplot> plot 'data.txt' u 1:2 w linespoints
         Bad format character


gnuplot> show version

What's wrong is that you're trying to use a format string only usable 
for time/date axes without switching that axis to time/date format.

See "help set xdata"

That's quite old.  We're at version 4.4 patchlevel 2 by now.
