[Gnuplot-info] pm3d depthorder

Dear gnuplot specialists,

I am trying to produce plots in which spatial densities (density
color-coded) are combined with structure data (positions, lines in
space). An example for the kind of plot is attached, with the problem
reduced to the minimum. In this example

"densityfile"  using 1:2:3:4 with pm3d

is used to generate the density in a particular area of space,

"linefile"  using 1:2:3 with lines lc rgb "black" lt 1 

etc generates the additional structures around. What I do not manage to
achieve in this way is proper ordering of the various elements in space.
I am aware of the discussion triggered by user joanpau in May of this
year. For that reason I am using gnuplot 4.4.2 (on Ubuntu Lucid). Still
the pm3d element always stays on top (rotate the example to see what I
mean). Is there a way around this?

I rather much doubt that it can be achieved at all, given the way 'pm3d' 
has always refused to cooperate with the other plotting modes, 
particularly 'set hidden3d'.  pm3d started out as a global plotting 
mode, rather than a graph style for individual datasets.  What you 
observe is one of the remaining effects of that design.
