[Gnuplot-info] how to suppress x axis labels in stacked multiplot?

I have a multiplot which looks like this:

clear

set multiplot layout 3,1
    load "p1.gnu"
    load "p2.gnu"
    load "p3.gnu"
unset multiplot

where each of the p?.gnu files defines a single plot.
All three plots have the same x range.  Reading the docs
for the set xtics command I couldn't figure out how to
have just the p3 plot display x axis labels.  All the plot
files have this overall form:

set grid xtics ytics
set xdata time
set timefmt "%H:%M:%S"
set format x "%H:%M"
set xrange ["09:00":]
set key right bottom nobox
set ytics nomirror
set xtics nomirror

plot ...

I tried

   set xtics ""

in the p1 and p2 plot files followed by

   set xtics

in the p3 plot file but none of the plots had x labels.
Is there some way to let it compute the labels for p3
and suppress them for p1 and p2?

Easy.  By breaking this scheme:

> set xtics nomirror

This was the right general idea already:

You want

	unset xtics

instead.

Alas, that doesn't work either.  I lose all x axis labels as well as the
vertical part of the grid.  Here's what I get:

What I want is this:

    http://www.webfast.com/~skip/plot-tics.png

but with the x axis labels on the top two plots removed.

Then it's probably

	set format x ""

you want.  And, like you originally were about to do, you want to do 
that only in the first 2 plots.  The last plot should return to the default

	set format x "% g"

Thanks, that gets me closer.  Now the labels are gone.  The vertical space
allocated to the missing x axis labels is still allocated, but I think I can
fudge that with some set size commands.
