[Gnuplot-info] Beginners question about data plots

Dear gnuplot users,

I have a question about plotting data files with gnuplot. What I 
am trying to do is plot my data (x,y and delta-y columns) so that data 
points are connected by lines and the errorbar is represented by a 
plain vertical line. I tried to accomplish this by using

set bars 0
plot 'data.dat' w yerrorlines

however, while the horizontal bars at the end of each errorbar are gone, 
and the datapoints are connected by a line, there is still a horizontal 
bar in the middle of each errorbar. Is there any way to get rid of this?
I use gnuplot 4.0 patchlevel 0.

That's not really a bar. It's the horizontal part of the point symbol 
that gnuplot puts in the middle of an errorbar.  You'll see it more 
easily if you change your plot command to:

	plot x, 'data.dat' w yerrorlines

If you don't want that, you can change the point symbol to a dot:

	plot 'data.dat' with yerrorlines pointtype -1
