[Gnuplot-info] Calculation of Differential Quotient while plotting

Hello,


is it possible to make gnuplot calculate the differential quotient  
while plotting a data file?
I.e., instead of y plot y', or rather using ( (y(n)-y(n-1)) / (x(n)-x 
(n-1)) )?

No, since gnuplot was designed to be a plot programme, not a 
formula manipulation programme. But as you are saying it is 
possible to calculate the differential quotient by hand. 
gnuplot only supports 'basic' mathematic facilities. See 
help expressions and help operators for more details.

No.  But you can have gnuplot place this work in the hands of another 
tool that is better suited to doing it.  E.g. a little awk or Perl 
script that you could run like this:

	plot '< diff_datafile 2 5 file.dat'
