[Gnuplot-info] Tilde and hat directly above a letter

I would be very grateful if someone could show me how to put a hat (^)
directly above w and a tilde (~) directly above D. In Latex one would 
write $\hat{w}$ and $\tilde{D}$. I tried

   set label "\\{\303{w}_{k,16}\\}@^{16}_{k=1} at 0.694, 0.846 left

but I got the hat on the lefthand side of w and not directly above w.
However, I want "^" directly above w and "~" directly above D. Thanks
for any help.

In which terminal driver?

You can do exactly that in gnuplot, if you choose one of the terminal 
drivers that output text via (La)TeX, most notably pslatex.

That cannot work --- the closing " is missing.
