[Gnuplot-info] Problem

I have installed gnuplot on Ubuntu using the Synaptic package manager 
and it says it has installed OK. When I type gnuplot in a terminal the 
package starts and I get the gnuplot prompt. However when I type help I 
get an error:-

/usr/local/share/gnuplot/4.0/gnuplot.gih: No such file or directory

When I browse my hard disk I find the the file gnuplot.gih is in directory:-

/usr/share/gnuplot

If I try plot sin(x) I get:-

Expected X11 driver: /usr/local/libexec/gnuplot/4.0/gnuplot_x11
Exec failed: No such file or directory
See 'help x11' for more details

There is no such directory as gnuplot under /usr/local/libexec/

Is there an obvious problem that can easily be fixed?

Well, that apparently isn't true.  And there's nothing we can do about 
that --- we didn't make a Synaptic package out of gnuplot.  You'll have 
to bring this to the attention of whoever did that, and tell them to be 
a bit more careful about the ./configure --prefix setting.
