No. But usually, this can be avoided by choosing a less strange font.
gnuplot does try to avoid this problem, but if it's wrongly informed (or
has to guess, and gets it wrong) about the the font's actual size, all
kinds of bad things can happen. Pick a fixed-width font, and use a
terminal where gnuplot has a realistic chance of actually *knowing* how
big the font is.
