I'm quite sure that this ever working was an illusion, caused by not
looking close enough to notice the differences. The above will open
*three* windows, and leave behind three gnuplot_x11 processes. They may
show up all in the same place, on top of each other, so they could be
hard to distinguish, but they're there.

Start with temporal coincidence then: what did he change to his system
when this stopped working?
