That's not a general change of behaviour.  If you see such a change, =
that's specific to some terminal drivers --- but you forgot to tell =
which driver it is you're observing this on.

That complicates matters further.  There are two completely separate 
terminal drivers in 4.0 that both generate PNGs, and both come under the 
name 'set term png'.  You'll have to check which of them you got ('help 
png' or 'show version long' tells).  You may have to recompile your 4.0 
binary to switch to the other one.
