either plot the function first:

plot sin(x)
replot "-"
2 2
1 -1
...
e

or use 'multiplot':

reset

set multiplot

set xrange [] writeback
set yrange [] writeback

plot '-'
2 2
1 -1
...
e

set xrange restore
set yrange restore

plot sin(x)

unset multiplot

set the same 'xrange' and 'yrange' for all plots.

position the keys for each plot individually with
set key at ...
