[Gnuplot-info] color-mapped lines on 2D plots

Hello,

I am using plot command to draw a simple area maps like this:
http://old.nabble.com/file/p29415470/waw-zch-map.png 

(This is actually a track of a flight from Warsaw to Zurich)

What I need, is to plot lines that would add a 3rd dimention to the plot.
I.e. to color the orange line according to the height of a plane. Just like
on the http://flightradar24.com

The only way I could come up with is to cut the line into sections according
to some height ranges and plot sections separately. 

However, it would be perfect to be able to have something like pm3d but for
lines.

Any advice? Thanks in advance.

you may use the 'palette z' option.

assuming your data are in the format
x y height
the plot command would looklike this:

plot "datafilename" using 1:2:3 with lines linecolor palette z
