[Gnuplot-info] surface 3d plot

Hello,

I would like to plot a surface (x,y,z) with a uniform color but also with
light/shadow effects. Also, it is possible to add translucidency as in other
softwares.

I have seen a trick to lighten locally the surface but it does not
correspond exactly to what I would like.

you may plot the surface with the 4th 'using' argument specifying
the color in 'pm3d' mode.
but this color information has to be calculated elsewhere, 'gnuplot'
isn't a ray-tracing program.

[Gnuplot-info] more on 3d plots

I wrote a script to read from protein data bank and to draw
molecular graphics in 3D based on Gnuplot.  The molecular
structure can spin on screen.  It is pretty cool, but
sometimes an object in the background may cover other objects
in the foreground.  I know this is stretching the capability
of Gnuplot, but if something can be done about this, Gnuplot
will perform at a different level.

translucency is a feature of the development version of gnuplot,
have a look at:
