[Gnuplot-info] Two questions on "here docs"

I am trying to understand gnuplot's new
"here doc" feature:

$data << EOD
1
2
3
EOD

plot $data

Questions:
1) Are there other ways to get data into these
  data structures, besides typing it in at the
  cmd prompt? For instance, is there a way to 
  read the data from a file?
2) Is there a preferred way to save the contents 
  of the data structure to file? I can do it using:
	set table "data.txt"; plot $d; unset table
  Is this the right way to think about this?

Normally it is part of a script file.
Many of the demos have been re-written to use it.
See for example heatmaps.dem

set print 'foo'
print $data

That's precisely where I am coming from -
I am trying to figure out how it would fit 
into an interactive workflow. (I can of 
course see how it keeps the demo scripts
tidy and self-contained.)
