I am trying to put some additional information on the x-axis like this

    1    2    3    4    5    6    7    8
<---Interval #1---><---Interval #2--->

Where should I look for such formatting?

I guess you can take advantage of the following options:

set label "text" at x,y
set arrow from x,y to x1,y1 no head
