[Gnuplot-info] Help: problems with gnuplot and ubuntu

Good morning,
i'm a student and i have installed ubuntu linux on vmware machine under
windows XP
I need gnuplot to make graphs, but when i launch the command like "plot
x**2" it plot
the graph in the Terminal using some characters like *, _, and others,
simulating the axises and all the other stuffs. The terminal Setted is
"dumb"...
i don't know how have the "normal" gnuplot, with the graph that appear in a
window form...

set terminal wxt
or
set terminal x11

'wxt' should be default in the ubuntu distribution.

That means your build of gnuplot fails to include any GUI drivers (X11, 
wxt).

You have to compile it with more libaries available.  The "configure" 
prints a lot of informative message --- read them.

Or (probably easier) just install the X11-enabled gnuplot package of 
gnuplot by your Linux distributor.
