[Gnuplot-bugs] gnuplot 4.2 has lost a feature - colors using variables

Dear All, 

gnuplot 4.0 had the wonderful feature that you could define 
variables and use them, for example the variable "col" here:

gnuplot> col=3 
gnuplot> plot sin(x) w l col

Now, in version 4.2
        Version 4.2 patchlevel 0
        last modified March 2007
        System: Linux 2.6.22-14-generic
, we find that this useful syntax is illegal:

gnuplot> col=3 
gnuplot> plot sin(x) w l col
                         ^
         ';' expected

Please
(1) are there any workarounds to retrieve the wonderful old
 functionality? 
(2) could the gnuplot developers restore this functionality 
 in the next release?

That syntax has been deprecated since before version 4.0.  Even the 
shortest of glances at the documentation would have clarified that what 
you want is

	plot sin(x) w l lt col
