     I was trying to install gnuplot and I am running into a problem.
I will try to include enough information to locate what might be going
wrong.  Do you think you could help?

It gets almost to the end of the
compilation and then I get an error message.  What I am including

That guess, unfortunately, was quite wrong, and so are all conclusions 
drawn from it.

The real current release is gnuplot-4.0.tar.gz in that same directory 
(if it's there).  But the recommended download location these days would 
be SF.net, anyway.

Hello, I was downloading Gnuplot from ftp://ftp.gnuplot.info/pub/gnuplot/
and before anything else, I decided to read the README file, and I missed=

description about the contents of the directory Current.

So, I guessed that this was the last functional version of the software a=
nd
downloaded the file=20

ftp://ftp.gnuplot.info/pub/gnuplot/current/gnuplot-pre4.0.tar.gz

when I decompressed it, I missed the "configure" file, normally used as t=
he
first step of the installation process (./configure ; make ; make install=
)

I don't know if it is a bug or a caracteristic of the Current directory f=
iles,=20
so, in doubt I decided to write.

You're missing one aspect of computer-based arithmetic here: the 
existence of different types of numbers.  gnuplot's floor() function 
yields an actual integer, not a floating-point number with an integer 
value.  So dividing it by another integer will behave differently from 
multiplying it with the floating-point inverse of that integer.

To get the same as floor(10*x)*0.1, try  floor(10*x)/10.0

In trying to plot a discrete signal, I get the following result.
Plotting floor(10*x) / 10 should, theoretically, yield the same plot as
floor(10*x) * 0.1, but the former yields the plot for floor(x).  If,
instead of carrying out the division floor(y*x)/y, I do
floor(y*x)*(y**(-1)), the plot is as expected.

It seems that if division is used, the coefficient of x cancels out.  If
multiplication with the inverse of the coefficient is used, the plot is
fine.  Is this intentional?

The problem is that, contrary your expectations, this function is *not*
actually constant.  You're expecting that an equality found in
infinite-precision arithmetic will be preserved in finite-precision
arithmetic as done by your computers.  Well, it's not.  As the saying
goes: "In computing 10 times 0.1 is hardly ever 1.0".

The hang is caused indirectly by this: this function is so close to 
being constant, that it drives the algorithm trying to determine a 
suitable axis range and tic interval face-first into the wall.  The 
actual range of values will be something like [1-a*DBL_EPS:1+b*DBL_EPS], 
for small integers a and b.

If you specify a suitable, fixed axis range, it will no longer hang, and 
you'll see the problem:

	set yrange [1-1e-15 : 1+1e-15]
	plot sin(x/2)**4 + sin(x)**2/2 + cos(x/2)**4

Or you can plot the difference between the supposedly constant result 
and the expected, actual constant:

The behaviour has been reproduced by others. A conjecture is that this =
is related to the first expression evaluating to the constant one, =
however, `plot sin(x)**2 + cos(x)**2` gives no such problem.

That sounds like you're using either wgnuplot.exe or wgnuplot_pipes.exe=20

Dear Gnuplot Team

With Gnuplot 3.7 patchlevel 3 and the command shell (!) , it was=20
possible on Windows (... NT4,XP) to launch and run a DOS program=20
independently of the gnuplot functionning. It is not the case with=20
Gnuplot version 4.0. The pipe system with this new version is nice and=20
interesting but I have also lost something because I have included the=20
launching of my numerous DOS applications in the TxtMenu. For a small=20
example, with the last version it was possible to launch gnuplot from=20
gnuplot in order to keep the hand in the both. Now, it is not the case.=20
So it will be good to have the both command 'shell with pipe or not'.

In an other hand, I am using frequently the TxtMenu to include the=20
lauching of my applications. So I generate several TxtMenu files but I=20
need alors to put them in differents directories with a copy of gnuplot=20
exe. If it will be possible to launch Gnuplot and the TxtMenu with an=20
other name of the later (for example gnuplot_2.mnu), it would be nice.=20
This would ask to put an option name of the Menu after the name of the=20
Gnuplot program. In the same way, to increase the memory height for the=20
Menu will be good.

You could use the menu item 'File/Open ...' or the 'Open' button instead.=

These methods work correctly.

The patch attached increases the maximum text length for drag and drop
operations to MAX_PATH.

That's not 'e.g.', it's exactly in drag/drop handling.  wgnuplot won't 
accept any drop event with more than 80 bytes of data.  If you're sure 
you want to change that (as opposed to, say, registering a filename 
extension for gnuplot scripts), feel free to do so.  The relevant place 
is DragFunc(), in src/win/wtext.c

Great tool, but seems to have an 80 character limit to the maximum 
pathname length e.g. when dragging and dropping a file of gnuplot 
commands. If I move the file to another directory and try that it
