AC_FUNC_SELECT is a macro provided by the gnuplot sourcecode itself (it's
in gnuplot/m4/select.m4). It's supposed to be imported through
aclocal.m4. That's why prepare runs aclocal with the flag -I m4.
Any chance one of the relevant files is checked out to a fixed version
in your working copy?

That comment is, indeed, outdated. AC_PREREQ() is the hard fact.
