converting the plot

I'm using gnuplot 4.0 and I am having a terrible time trying to convert
and save the plot as a png image file.  I managed to do it once by
setting the terminal to png and saving the file with a .png script on
it.  However I am not able to repeat the procees for another plot.  The
tutorial and help sites have not given adequate explanation for this.
Could you please send an answer with an example in syntax to solve this.

Part of the problem is a terminology mismatch.  In gnuplot you don't 
"convert" or "save" plots.  You generate plot output from commands, and 
it depends on the 'set terminal' state what kind of output format you 
get, and on 'set output' where it'll go.  Please look up these commands 
in the help and it should all be clear.

set terminal push
set terminal png
set output 'myfile.png'
# ...
# your plotting commands, or a 'load'
# ...
set output
set terminal pop

gnuplot> set term png
gnuplot> set output 'test.png'
gnuplot> plot x
gnuplot> set output

Set "help set term png" for a list of any options.
