I saw the same errors from clients at multiple sites; I ran
cvs under "strace" and saw the error message coming from the
server; and I noted that the PIDs (e.g., 6605) were not from
the client system.

I'll happily do so if this happens in the future; I wasn't
sure what the right procedure was. The problem persisted
yesterday, but seems to have been resolved now.
